Overview

Roger has been based at Beckhampton since 1978, where he was assistant to Jeremy Tree for 12 years. During those years Rainbow Quest, Danehill, Sharpo and Known Fact were in the yard.

In his first year in charge in 1990 he won the French and English Derby with Sanglamore and Quest for Fame. Since then Tamarisk, Patavellian, Tante Rose, Avonbridge, Cityscape, Thistle Bird, Al Kazeem, Quest for More and Decorated Knight have kept him at the top of the game.

Not only has he specialised in multiple stakes winning horses, horses under his care have also landed the prestigious The Old Newton Cup, The Zetland Gold Cup, The Magnet Cup, 2  Britannia, 2 King George V Handicap, The Duke of Edinburgh, 2 Cambridgeshires, 2 Bunbury Cups, 3 Totesport Miles, and 3 Stewards Cups.

In January 2022 Harry Charlton became the joint trainer.

What to expect

The Charlton team are lucky to have two seperate yards, a top yard and a main yard with both yards each having a covered horse walker and wash down bay. Although all the horses trot together in the woodchip trotting ring over on the main yard the top yard is also equipped with a trotting ring for when it’s needed. Each yard has turnout paddocks for the horses as well as turnout pens. The top yard also has it’s own very large secure lunge ring.

The team are also lucky to have 2 all weather gallops which include a 6 furlong Polytrack gallop and a 7 furlong Woodchip gallop. The grass gallops at Beckhampton are extensive and range from short canter gallops to a mile and a half Valley Gallop.
